KP2 Installation Guide

The full installation of the KP2 dual-channel video telematics camera, from unboxing to a verified, calibrated device.

Before You Begin

The KP2 is a dual-channel video telematics camera. It records the road ahead and when the optional driver facing camera is installed, the cab interior. This article covers the full installation from unboxing to a verified, calibrated device.

Allow about 15 minutes for the installation, plus time for routing the cable and running the verification check at the end.

Buttons and lights on the device


ControlWhat it does
Large red buttonPressing it raises a panic event and flags the footage at that moment so it can be found later.
Small black buttonG-sensor calibration. Press for 3 seconds and listen for the confirmation tone. Holding it down longer puts the device into Bluetooth pairing mode for the external panic button, where the red and blue lights blink.
Red lightThe warning light. Off is healthy. Steady or blinking means a fault, and the pattern tells you which one.
Blue lightThe record light. On means the device is recording. It blinks fast during shutdown.
Green lightThe network light. On means the device has an LTE connection. After boot it is either on or off, so off is the fault.

Blue and green on with red off is the healthy state. All three lights on together is the normal end of the boot sequence, not a fault. The full set of fault patterns is in Step 7 below, and in the KP2 status light and sound reference.

Tools and conditions you need
Trim removal tool for routing cable behind panels if desired
An ambient temperature between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, or 10 to 27 degrees Celsius. The adhesive will not bond reliably outside this range.
A level surface to park on. Calibration depends on it.

Check local law first. Windshield-mounted device rules vary by state, province and country. Confirm the placement you plan to use is compliant before you install the device.

Step 1. Prepare the Camera

Peel the protective decal from each camera lens.

Loosen the screws on the side panel closest to the driver facing camera and remove the side panel. Leave the side panel off for now so that you can aim the camera after mounting.

The road-facing camera sits in the knurled barrel along the edge of the device, with its own locking screw next to it. Loosen that screw so the barrel turns freely, and leave it loose so you can aim the camera once the device is mounted.

Step 2. Choose the Mounting Position

Mount the KP2 as close to the horizontal center of the windshield as the vehicle allows, high on the glass and behind the rear-view mirror shadow where possible. Centering the device keeps the road camera square to the direction of travel and keeps the mirror blind spot small.

The mounting position must satisfy all of the following.

The device does not obstruct the driver's field of view.
The device is clear of any airbag deployment path.

Mount the road-facing camera as high in the wiper sweep as the vehicle allows, with the lens within the top 2 inches of the swept area. A clear lens in the rain is worth more than a perfectly centered mount. Federal rules for commercial vehicles allow the device up to 8.5 inches below the top edge of the swept area, so a lower position can still be compliant where 2 inches is not achievable. Confirm the placement against local regulations before applying the adhesive. 

For a driver-facing installation the camera also needs to sit level with or slightly above the driver's eyes and nose, with a clear view of the face and minimal obstruction from the mirror, sun visor or A-pillar. The road-facing camera is aimed with its lens angle lock screw, so set the angle and tighten the screw once the bracket is mounted.

Step 3. Mount the Camera

Clean the mounting area with an alcohol prep pad and let the glass dry completely. Any film left on the glass will cost you adhesion.

Remove the backing from the 3M tape on the bracket.

 Apply the 3M tape/camera to the non-stick side of the Sticker Shield doing your best to apply it centered and square to the sticker.

Hold the camera against the Sticker Shield and hold steady pressure for at least 30 seconds.

Confirm that 80 to 90 percent of the tape surface is in contact with the Sticker Shield. A partial bond will release in summer heat.

Position before you press. Dry-fit the camera and mark the spot before you apply the Sticker Shield. The Sticker Shield is what lets you remove and refit the device later, but the shield itself still needs to go on in the right place the first time.

Now remove the backing from the Sticker Shield and apply the Sticker Shield/camera to the windshield.  

Why the Sticker Shield. The bracket's 3M tape bonds to the Sticker Shield instead of the windshield, so the device can be removed and reapplied without ruining the adhesive or leaving residue on the glass. Refrain from trimming the sticker shield as the large surface area of the sticker allows the camera to remain fixed to the windshield. 

Step 4. Connect Power

The KP2 is powered by the OBD-II adapter. It runs on 12 V or 24 V DC and draws up to 1.5 A, with power consumption around 4 W, rising to about 6 W with ADAS and driver monitoring enabled. The adapter handles all of that, so there is no wiring to do.

Locate the vehicle OBD-II port. It is usually under the dash on the driver's side, within reach of the steering column.

Plug the adapter into the vehicle OBD-II port and confirm it is fully seated.

Splitter cables are available for heavy vehicles that use a JBUS diagnostic connector, so the adapter can share the port with existing equipment.

The OBD-II adapter is the only supported power connection. Do not hardwire the device and do not power it from a cigarette lighter socket.

Step 5. Route and Secure the Cable

Run the cable from the bracket up to the headliner, then across and down the A-pillar, and along to the OBD-II port under the dash.

Tuck the cable behind the weather stripping and press the stripping back into place to hold it.

Apply the adhesive cable clips where the cable crosses open glass, spaced evenly, with the clip openings facing upward so the cable cannot fall out.

Leave no slack loops where a passenger can snag them, and keep the cable clear of the airbag path and any moving trim.
Step 6. Aim the Cameras

With the device seated on the bracket, rotate the knurled barrel along the bottom edge to set the road-facing camera so its view is level with the road ahead, showing only a small amount of hood in the frame. Tighten the locking screw next to it once the angle is right.

Aim the driver-facing camera at the driver, then reinstall the side panel once you are satisfied with the angle.

Nudge both cameras and confirm neither one moves. A lens left loose will drift out of aim and degrade the ADAS alerts.
Step 7. Power Up and Calibrate the G-Sensor

Park on a flat, level surface. Calibration recorded on a slope will bias every acceleration and braking event the device reports.

Start the vehicle. The device works through its boot sequence, ending with all three status lights on. That is the normal end of boot and not a fault.

Press the small black G-sensor calibration button for 3 seconds. It is the black button immediately to the right of the three status lights.

Listen for the confirmation tone. Some newer firmware builds calibrate silently, so treat the absence of a tone as inconclusive rather than as a failure.

Wait 5 minutes, then confirm the device has settled with the blue and green lights on and the red light off. Blue means it is recording. Green means it has an LTE connection.

Press for 3 seconds and release. Holding the calibration button down longer puts the device into Bluetooth pairing mode for the external panic button, where the red and blue lights blink. That is easy to mistake for a fault.

If the lights do not settle into blue and green on with red off after 5 minutes, the device is reporting a fault. The key patterns are listed below.

Camera aim drives the ADAS accuracy. Following distance and forward collision detection depend on what the road camera can see. A lens left badly aimed, or left loose in its mount, will produce alerts that fire at the wrong time for the life of the installation.

Step 8. Verify Before You Leave the Vehicle

Run this check on every installation. It takes two minutes and catches the faults that otherwise come back as a support ticket a week later.

Blue and green lights are on and red is off.
The device appears online in the platform with the correct vehicle assignment.
A short test clip from both channels is retrievable and correctly oriented.
The road camera view shows the road ahead with only a small amount of hood in the frame.
The driver-facing camera, if fitted, frames the driver's face with room to spare when the seat is at its furthest back position.
The cable is fully concealed (optional) and the bracket is firmly bonded.
Cycle the ignition off and on once and confirm the device shuts down and reboots. On shutdown the blue light blinks fast and the buzzer sounds a tone, which is expected.
